Young man from Alabama

I was remodeling an apartment complex in Mesa, Az. I needed a helper on the job so I hired a young man through a Temporary Service Co. He worked very hard all week. Friday at noon, he asked if he could have the afternoon off to buy some flowers for his wife and surprise her by taking her to lunch and a movie. They had come up from Alabama to get a new start. They had some marital difficulties in the past and were trying to get a fresh start. His nephew had come with them but had not found a job yet.

I had been talking to him and teaching him about Christ during the week while we worked together. I wanted to be gracious to him so I gave him the afternoon off. He could come back Saturday morning to finish his work week.

About 2 pm, he came back to the job site carrying a pistol in his belt. I asked why he came back and what was the gun all about? He proceded to tell me that he had bought the flowers and went to the apartment to find his wife in bed with his nephew. He was so angry that he went to his truck and got his pistol but decided he would come and talk to me first. He said he didn't know whether to shoot his wife, the nephew or both of them. I was able to convince him that it would add to an already ugly and sinful situation.

He did not return to the job Saturday and I didn't see him again. About two years later, he called me about 2 in the morning to let me know that he had turned to Christ and was involved in a good church. He wanted to thank me for being there for him the two years before and pointing him to The Lord. God is so good to His people.
